In Norse mythology, Ratatoskr is a squirrel that runs tirelessly along the trunk of the great cosmic tree Yggdrasil. Her role is that of messenger between the tree's extremes: she carries words — and often insults — from the eagle nesting at the crown down to the dragon Níðhöggr gnawing at the roots, and back again. It is not a neutral task: her messages fuel discord and keep a fragile balance in motion. Without Ratatoskr, the worlds would stop communicating.
She is a minor figure in the Norse pantheon — no temples, no altars — but ever-present. While the gods conspire and wage war, she runs. Up and down, without pause, the invisible thread that sews the universe together so it does not fall apart.
