Vratatoskr does not exist in Norse mythology. Ratatoskr has no siblings or companions recorded in any text; she has run Yggdrasil alone since time immemorial. But in NutQuest we decided to give her an alter ego: someone who shares her essence but expresses it in a completely different way.
His name comes from adding the prefix vra to the original. In Old Norse, vrangr means twisted, oblique, contrary — that which goes in the opposite direction from what is expected. Vratatoskr is, literally, the reverse Ratatoskr: the same intelligence, the same knowledge of the worlds, the same usefulness… but without the coat of friendliness that defines his counterpart.
For those who prefer things straight
If Ratatoskr guides you with enthusiasm and warmth, Vratatoskr does it with relentless efficiency and a sarcasm that, depending on your temperament, can be either brutally refreshing or mildly irritating. He does not waste time on praise he does not feel you have fully earned. He points out mistakes with surgical precision and gets straight to the point, always.
But he is loyal. Deeply loyal. He will not abandon you in the middle of a difficult world, he will analyse your performance with the same dedication as Ratatoskr, and he will be there when you need him most — even if he expresses it in a way you did not expect. Vratatoskr's spirit draws directly from Rick Sanchez, the most unpredictable genius in modern science fiction: a character of boundless intelligence, dry wit and a capacity for wonder he rarely admits to openly. Rick never does things the conventional way, but he almost always gets the job done, one way or another.
Vratatoskr has that same energy. He is not the companion who will pat you on the back at the drop of a hat, but if you want an ally who combines limitless competence with an attitude that keeps things interesting, you will not find a better partner for adventuring through the worlds of knowledge.
