The forgetting problem

Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve is not a historical curiosity: without active reinforcement, a person forgets roughly 70 % of what they learned within 24 hours. NutQuest is explicitly designed to combat this mechanism.

The testing effect

Roediger & Karpicke (2006) published the finding that reshaped modern educational psychology: retrieving information from memory strengthens that memory far more than re-reading the material. This phenomenon is called the testing effect or retrieval practice.

A review by Dunlosky et al. (2013) in Psychological Science in the Public Interest evaluated ten widely-used study techniques and found that distributed retrieval practice is the only one with consistently high evidence of efficacy — far ahead of popular techniques like highlighting or summarising.

Retrieval in NutQuest

NutQuest's spaced-repetition system schedules each concept to be retrieved just before the probability of recall drops below a threshold. This «desirable difficulty» interval maximises consolidation: the effort of remembering is the signal that tells the brain this knowledge is worth keeping.

Combined with explained immediate feedback — not just «wrong» but why and what it connects to — the cycle produces learning that lasts weeks, not hours.
